Upcoming Pittsburgh Events

October 2, 2007 – 4:41 pm

Since people seemed to find it useful last week, here’s another list of upcoming local events for this week:

Updated: Thursday, October 4, 8:00 pm opening (continues to run Oct 4-7 and Oct 11-14)
In Service @ Harris Theater
Combining live performance, projected video, and still images, In Service presents first-hand experiences of those who have served in Iraq as soldiers and government officials, and those recording events there as journalists. In Service is produced by Bricolage Theatre Company and Pittsburgh Filmmakers / Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Thanks to Justin and Anne for passing along information about this event.

Thursday, October 4, from 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Project Olympus @ Entrepreneurial Thursdays
Olympus, an innovative CMU initiative that I liveblogged at last week, is partnering with other great local organizations for their event this week. CMU’s Center for Technology Transfer and Enterprise Creation, the Tepper’s Pittsburgh Alumni Chapter, and Project Olympus, are working with Jessica Lee of Entrepreneurial Thursdays to host their event at the Altar Bar. The cover is only $10 and you can pay at the door. I co-hosted a “New Media Entrepreneurs” panel with Jessica a few months ago, so I can definitely recommend this event.

Thursday, October 4, from 5:00 pm - late
Geek Night @ Church Brew Works
The only downside to the previous event is that it’s running at the same time as the regular bi-monthly Geek Night, one of Pittsburgh’s longest-running local gatherings for high-tech workers. I encouraged Guru.com to sponsor the last one and I expect the 55th one this week to be just as good. Also, it is totally possible to attend both this event and the Project Olympus one, since Church Brew Works and the Altar Bar are only a few minutes away from each other.

Saturday, October 6, from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Art Olympic Theatre @ New Hazlett Theater
When I first heard about this event, my first thought was “Hmm…this sounds a lot like the Creative Marathon…” In fact, both events involve Buddy Nutt (everyone’s favorite local Kazoo player) and probably attract similar crowds. The main differences seem to be that Art Olympic Theater is better funded (thanks to a Seed Award) and that the artists work in teams in more of a public performance atmosphere. I’m planning on checking it out this weekend and maybe signing up for a team in the future.

Sunday, October 7, from 7:00 pm - late
Liquid Sundays @ Rex Theatre
I just heard about this event by way of Sarah Madia and Norm Huelsman. I’ve never been to this art and music show myself, but much cooler people like Kim Reed and Matt Gondek have. Anyway, since I’m a big dork and mainly go to tech-oriented events, feel free to send me news of any cool events normal people would actually go to. Or better yet, if you want to reach other normal people, send them to Lindsay Patross and they might get featured in her regular Friday Radio Round Up.
